Die skrywer Jan van Tonder is besig met ’n draaiboek van sy apartheids­roman Roepman en meen die ­eerste weergawe behoort vroeg in die nuwe jaar reeds gereed te wees.

Piet de Jager, ’n senior advokaat aan die Pretoria-balie en die ­vervaardiger van die prent, sê ­hulle wil ’n Afrikaanse kunsfliek met onderskrifte in verskeie tale maak. Volgens hom gaan die Vlaamse rolprentmaker Walter Stokman die regisseur van die fliek wees. “Hy het die Nederlandse teks van Roepman gelees en ­gesê dis so ’n universele storie dat dit ’n fliek behoort te wees.

“Walter het die dokkie Beautiful in Beaufort-Wes gemaak wat nooit hier uitgereik is nie. Dit gaan oor die dorp, maar is ook ’n storie. Hulle het dit in Nederland uitgereik en dit was daar onder die top 20.”

De Jager, Van Tonder en ­Stokman en die musikant ­Sallas de Jager, musiekregisseur, het onlangs oor die projek ­ver­gader.

“Ons het ’n week lange dinkskrum gehou om die boek na 90 minute te verkort,” vertel De Jager.

Nog ’n Suid-Afrikaanse vennoot is die vervaardiger Danie Bester se Film Factory, wat by die Afrikaanse flieks Ouma se Slim Kind en Bakgat! betrokke was.

Volgens De Jager is die sentrale tema dié van ’n seun wat man word. “Dit gebeur met hom in ’n ­tipiese Calvinistiese omgewing en tydens apartheid. Daar’s soveel goed wat invloede het; ’n sterk godsdienstige en ’n politieke ondertoon wat jy nie kan miskyk nie.

“ ’n Roepman in die spoorweë is die laagste vorm van arbeid. Hy het met ’n fiets gery en mense ­geroep om betyds vir hul skof te wees. Die allegorie is ’n beeld van Christus of Boeddha. Hy verskyn net sewe keer, maar los elke keer ’n probleem op of ontlont ’n situasie. Aan die einde word hy vermoor deur die boewe in die dorp.”

De Jager sê dis toeval dat hulle juis nou aan die fliek werk, maar meen dis ook tydig.

“As jy na die politieke situasie van huisgesinne in die 1960’s kyk, het hulle die nuwe Suid-Afrika tot stand gebring. Die ouens wat in 1997 Ja-stemmers was, is omtrent almal ouens wat uit daai tyd kom; die kindergeslag.

“Die fliek self het niks om­streden­heid nie; dis net ’n pragtige ­storie. Tipiese goed wat in daai tyd gebeur het, is die dominee wat kom besluit wat gebeur in die huis; die opstandigheid van die jonger ­geslag. Daar’s ’n generasiegaping wat skrik vir niks en dis nog nooit só vertel nie.”

Van Tonder, wat onlangs sy skipperslisensie verwerf het, ­vertel hy geniet die draaiboekskrywery.

“Ek hou van nuwe goed. Ek het begin met prosa, radiodrama en toe verhoogdrama. Die volgende logiese ding voel na ’n fliekdraaiboek. Ek skryf visueel. ”

Hoewel hulle ’n kunsfliek wil maak, probeer hy nie ’n bepaalde boodskap tuisbring nie.

“Ek skryf ’n storie. As jy ’n boodskap wil ­lewer, maak jy ’n flop. Of dit nou godsdienstig is of oor jou broer gaan – dis amper gewaarborg jy gaan flop. Jy’s in die eerste plek daar om te vermaak; nie om te preek nie.”

Slated for a March 18 release, the action comedy stars Rapulana Seiphemo and Kenneth Nkosi, and was directed by Jann Turner.White Wedding was quickly pirated after its release (which was such a backhanded compliment to the film) so the producers are being very circumspect about screeners and information. However, having seen it at last year’s Durban International Film Festival I can safely say it is funny and well worth watching.
It’s about an honest cop working in a small town who suddenly finds himself embroiled in a huge truck hijacking scheme… and it’s even got a hectic helicopter scene! Seriously.
The marketing for Paradise Stop will kick in soon, which should make for an interesting exercise since the film uses several languages and touches on all sorts of themes such as police corruption and small town mentalities versus big city living.
First up though, we’ll get to see slasher/thriller flick, Night Drive (February 18), which sees “an eclectic mix of tourists left stranded on a night safari. Local folklore speaks of the Hyena Man, a ruthless criminal mastermind known for trading with animals and animal body parts.
“Legend has it that he now heads up a well-armed, well-trained group of poachers on the hunt for human beings, dead or alive…”
That description is straight out of a press release, which announced that the bush slasher had been picked up by an American distributor and would be shown at the Berlin Film Festival in mid-February.
Oliver Schmitz’s film, Life, Above All, which was South Africa’s submission for the foreign film category at the Oscars, opens on March 11. This poignant human interest story has garnered critical acclaim wherever it plays and is based on Allan Straton’s book, Chanda’s Secret.
Another local film which will play at the Berlin Film Festival this year is State of Violence. Produced by DV8, the political thriller, directed by Khalo Matabane, screened at last year’s Durban International Film festival to mixed results.
“It’s not going to be a huge release, but we are targeting specific audiences,” said producer Jeremy Nathan.
Test screenings indicate that women and youth are much more interested in the film, which is about a Joburg BEE boss whose violent past comes back to haunt him with dire results.
State of Violence doesn’t have a definite release date yet, but Nathan is optimistic it will be pencilled in soon, considering the growing box office success of local films.
“I’m happy about the success of Spud and Liefling over the holidays. It shows that local audiences want to see their own stories, and not necessarily just Schuster,” said Nathan.
DV8 has also just finished How to Steal 2 Million, which will mark Charlie Vundla’s (up to know he’s worked on straight DVD films like The List and Friends Like These) cinematic debut.
Starring Menzi Ngubani, Rapulana Seiphemo, Terry Pheto and John Kani, the film is about a thief who wants to go straight when everyone around him is revelling in their criminal ways.
The popular M-Net Kyknet series Getroud Met Rugby gets a spin-off film of the same name (Getroud Met Rugby – Die Onvertelde Storie opens March 11). The storyline fits in between series two and three and sees two rugby players (Izak Davel and Altus Theart) cross paths.
Another Afrikaans film, Roepman, directed by Paul Eilers, is slated for release on May 24. Based on Jan van Tonder’s book about a 1966 railway community, as seen through the eyes of an 11-year-old boy, the coming of age film stars John Henry Opperman and young Paul Loots.
Jock of the Bushveld has shifted out its South African release to time it closer to the American distribution (the threat of piracy increases if the South African and US release dates are too far apart).
The locally animated 3D film (pictured) has been picked up for European and American release, but before it releases in the third quarter of this year they’ll have to make some changes to the narrative.
Since American audiences aren’t too familiar with the storyline they’ll either need to add a narrator or be more explicit in the storyline.The addition of Hollywood-based marketing and distribution company Visio Entertainment does bring with it the chance to secure more international voice artists and, of course, the merchandising opportunities now go into overdrive.
Several local partners such as Edgars have already aligned themselves with the film, which tells a quintessentially South African story.
Another typically South African story is that of the Bang Bang Club (April 29), a dramatisation of the true story of four photographers documenting the end of apartheid in Joburg during the 1990s. Directed by Steven Silver, it was filmed here as a Canadian/South African co-production.
The other animated film from a local production company, Lion of Judah, should be released in America in April and has tentatively been pencilled in for an end of May release on our local circuit.
Looking forward Platteland, which is currently shooting in the Free State, should be ready for release by June. Directed by Sean Els, this musical stars Bok van Blerk and Liane May as well as Paul Luckhoff, Steve Hofmeyr and Hanna Grobler. It’s the story of a boervrou who loses everything and has to start all over again.
Then there’s Anton Ernst’s PS Ek Lief You (with Kurt Darren and Christina Storm) for April 8, Superhelde (about two geeks who want to save their local comic book shop) for April 22 and also a film called Ek Joke Net for June 24.

The tension has been building ever since his iconic cult legend “Two Lane Blacktop” and this film noir with David Lynch overtones is just what people wanted.Dark, mysterious, seething, sensuous are the words that were running through the minds of those attending the recent screening of the film at the “To Hellman and Back” night at the Lincoln Center in New York.
Unfortunately, at the conclusion of this rambling mish-mash of murky mystery most of them were asking each other what they had just seen.Make no mistake; this is a thoroughly enjoyable film. It starts out flashing on the stunning Velma Duran (Shannyn Sossamon) in one of Hellman’s favorite scenes. Nobody is better than he is at filming scenes in cars. He is able to work within that claustrophobic, restricted space to produce visions that look inside the person in the car. When he shoots inside a car, he shoots inside the person.
It does not hurt that Sossamon is beautiful. She is a beautiful brunet with that subtle blend of openness and danger that Lynch made famous in his films and especially in the “Twin Peaks” TV series. When you see her you do not know whether to propose to her or run from her.Like the brunets in “Twin Peaks” Velma Duran is a doppelganger. She is two people in one. She is playing a character in a film based on a famous real estate swindle. Plus she may well have stolen the identity of the real Velma Duran who was killing fighting against Castro in Cuba.
Plus she is Laurel Graham, a reclusive ex-patriot living comfortably with no visible means of support. The film tells her story in a completely nonlinear manner, flashing back and forth in time and between several possible realities.
In this film within a film, director Mitch Haven (long time Hellman collaborator Tygh Runyan) plays Monte Hellman’s alter ego. Haven is completely dedicated to the film and he is especially dedicated to casting for the film. “Directing is 90% casting,” says Haven, and, what do you know, Hellman agrees.As it turns out, Haven has cast the leading role of Velma Duran all too well. With his own conscience snapping at his heels, along with insurance investigator Bruno Brotherton (Waylon Payne) he has cast himself into the film as well. Too bad he will not find that out until too late.
Cliff De Young plays the dual roles of Cary Stewart and Rafe Tachen. Tachen is the man at the bottom of the swampy, dark and deadly real estate swindle that gave haircuts to some very dangerous men to the tune of $100 million. Stewart plays the role of Tachen in the film, another built in doppelganger of a character.
Tachen fell for Duran and the sloe-eyed, dark-hair devil next door took him to the cleaners. Stewart is smarter, playing opposite Laurel Graham, but there is nothing he can do to stop director Haven being sucked under the quicksand of his latest movie.A big part of Hellman’s genius is being able to tell six or eight life stories using four characters. He is also able to pull the audience out of reality and into his dream by using a non-linear presentation.
There are no more than about three to five events shown in actual chronological order in this entire two to three hour film (the length depends on the cut you see). At times it is difficult or impossible to tell whether the scene is the actors acting out the film in the present or if it is a flashback of past events showing the real people.
The worst part of all this is that some of the key scenes appear to have been shot to intentionally make it hard for the viewer to follow the story. At times the film crosses over the line from visionary to self-indulgence. People will walk out of this movie: it is no fun to view random events that refuse to coalesce into a story.
The good news is that the cinematography (Josep Civit), soundtrack (Tom Russell) and acting is superb from start to finish. The film starts off with a brooding, guilt-drenched feeling that screams despair like the whine of the Beachcraft’s engine as Rafe Tachen pilots his plane into the ground.
