The next Susan Bole? A 22-year-old manual worker from Korea is being dubbed the new Susan Boyle after reducing talent show judges to tears with his powerful voice and inspirational story of overcoming a hardscrabble childhood.

Video footage of Sung-Bong Choi’s audition on last weekend’s edition of Korea’s Got Talent has amassed more than three million views on YouTube, as the world sits captivated by a life story that tugs at the heartstrings. Sung-Bong vividly recalls being orphaned at just five years old and embarking on a life alone. He describes living in public restrooms and selling energy drinks and gums to commuters on the street to get by.

“I just want to be like a normal person. I don’t sing that well but when I do sing, I feel like a different person,” he said.

Choi impressed the judges with his powerful, operatic voice, earning him a standing ovation from the studio audience and acclaim from web gawkers around the globe.

“I just want to give you a hug,” said one of the judges with tears in her eyes before thanking him for his “awesome performance” and announcing he was through to the next round.

It’s since emerged that Choi attended a high school specializing in the performing arts. The tvN network explains that the singer mentioned his training to the judges prior to his audition, but it was edited out to make his story flow better.
